House prices ‘out of reach’ – MP
BY GRACE CABELL
Post-quake housing prices in Hornby are booming as the Government announces 237 new homes for the area.
Last week the Government announced a housing development would be built on AwateaCarrs Rd as part of its affordable housing plan. But Wigram MP Dr Megan Woods said its price mark was out of reach for too many. Average market value for homes in the area has been steadily increasing, rising from $275,000 to more than $400,000 in the past four years. Since 2012, the average price of rent has also increased by

Out of the Government’s 237 new homes, only 89 would be tailored for those on a lower income, at a purchase price of less than $400,000. With about 56 per cent of residents in the area on an annual income of less than $70,000, Dr Woods said: “There needs to be a serious assessment of the housing crisis in Christchurch, and 89 homes for the price of DETERMINED: Kirkwood Intermediate’s Cassidy Alexander has her eyes $400,000 is not going to be it.” fixed on the basket as she positions herself for a successful shot against She said there needed to be Taylor Beauchamp, Michelle Anderson, Christchurch South Intermediate during the Christchurch Intermediate options available on a much Jayden Sofia Kostina, Keziah Oliver Schools girls’ indoor basketball tournament atBooth Pioneer Stadium last week. larger scale. •More photos, pages 14 and 15. Perspiration saturates my skin as realisation dawns - I was facing a killer puffer fish… By Isaac Heap (Age 10) Another early morning, YET AGAIN!!! I remember today we were going snorkeling (for the second time) but this time with a different company. It is another warm day, too warm a day in Aussie. As the tribe of “Heaps” stroll down the marina, we inevitably got lost. Then Connor my older brother, a man of many words, said “stick with the herd of tourists”. His words of wisdom saved us from our first peril. 1st peril: Getting lost at marina. 2nd peril: Mum seasick (NOT!! A pretty sight). 3rd peril: Putting on the wet suit (dad insisted “it will keep you warm”.... NOT) 4th peril: Finding the right fitting mask for your face, snorkel and flippers.
• Clown Anemonefish are all born male and will only change to be a dominant female. They clean the sea anemone by eating parasites, algae and zooplankton and the anemone offers protection from predators.
As you can see, there are a lot of perils but to stop you from wasting half your day reading the list I’ll go on. Anyway by then we were almost ready to hop into the warm, clear, colourful waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
It sure was a day to remember.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I will list some animals in the reef and some will have a caution or dangerous note but keep in mind the chances of seeing them are slim. I did my research and I named my favourite 12 sea animals.
I spent hours in the water and was exhausted at the end of the afternoon. I went on a tour with the marine biologist at the last stop and she swam all over showing us all sorts of things including sea cucumbers, starfish and bump head parrot fish. We got a huge lunch on board the Poseidon and luckily mum wasn’t sick on the homebound trip.
Non-important note/fact (opinionated note/fact) You will notice that I did not put caution on the sharks. Did you know they kill ten humans each year. We kill about 100 million of them yearly. They are very important at the top of the food chain. Remove these from the food chain and the Cortex Squid will step up and kill everything.

Any way, I’m getting off topic. We sailed on Poseidon, a snorkeling company boat. We had three snorkeling stops on the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling is actually easy as long as your mask fits snugly and doesn’t fill with water. The sea is so warm, the corals brilliant colours and there are hundreds of different fish to spot. Even mum who is a nervous swimmer just loved what she saw under the ocean. The second stop was the best as dad, Connor and I saw a Whitetip Reef Shark just cruising on the bottom. Mum fled the scene terrified.

Community supports family
▌IN ▌ BRIEF Donation for schools
Over the past four weeks shoe company The Athlete’s Foot has donated more than $17,000 to Christchurch schools. Through the 2014 School Rewards Programme, The Athlete’s Foot Northlands and Riccarton have presented 18 Christchurch schools with cash, vouchers and sporting equipment. Riccarton High School, Middleton Grange, Cobham Intermediate School, Christchurch Boys’ High School, Kirkwood Intermediate School and Medbury School were one of the many recipients of the rewards programme this year.
BY GRACE CABELL One Christchurch family is receiving some much-needed community support to look after their sick daughter. Three-year-old pre-schooler Charlotte Moriarty has an aggressive soft-tissue tumour in her pelvis. To get the treatment she needs, Charlotte’s family have had to move to Australia for radiotherapy which could not be provided in New Zealand. Charlotte’s father Joe Moriarty was a builder and carpenter. He quit his job mid-year to start up his own business, until Charlotte was diagnosed in July. After Mr Moriarty quit his job, Portebelo Preschool in Avonhead, was worried the family would not have enough money to support themselves overseas. The Canterbury District Health Board had provided funding for Charlotte and her mother, but her twin brother, PJ and father have had to fund themselves. To help out, Avonhead residents have been pitching in to help support the pre-schooler and her family. Last Thursday, the pre-school held a shared morning tea and

Pre-school members organised the community fundraiser to help supply basic needs, such as accommodation. The money raised would also help Charlotte and her family to pay for the specific form of radiotherapy, brachytherapy. So Chris, tell me a bit about yourself, are you Christchurch born and bred? No I’m not actually. I’m an immigrant – I’m from South Africa. When did you move to New Zealand? I arrived with my family in 2002, and I was a policeman in South Africa before I came over to do my teacher training in New Zealand. Have you always lived in the same area here? I’ve always lived in Southbridge; the rural community has been really good to us. Our daughter was nine at the time we moved here, and we didn’t want to stop her education. So we enrolled her in school two to three days in, and then ended up staying – 12 years on we’re still in Southbridge. But it is time now to make a shift into Redwood. So from a policeman to a teacher, why the shift in roles? I know it sounds unusual for a policeman to teach, but I was
a dog instructor in the force so had always been a teacher in some way. I have a passion for teaching and learning and making a difference for kids. How did it happen? I’ve always wanted to be a part of education. There was an opportunity I saw on an advert, I think, on a TeachNZ site, and so met up with Dr Jo Fletcher and had an interview, and they said come on board. I’ve always had a love for education. You teach at Tai Tapu School, how long have you been there? This is my eighth year at Tai Tapu. I started in 2007 and will keep going up until end of this year. How have you enjoyed your time there?
MOVING ON: Year 7 and 8 teacher at Tai Tapu School Chris Els, will take a step up to become the deputy principal of Redwood Primary School next year . I’ve loved it. It’s been a great in 2006 at the College of school, a great community. Education and got my teaching I’ve been fortunate enough to degree. I’m actually back doing coach the girls’ cricket side, and my postgraduate education we’re back to Palmerston North studies at the moment. It’s a for the third year for nationals one-year postgraduate course. – last week we won the South I’ll finish at the end of this year, Island championships. I’m very and then I have another two sporty so I love that it’s a sporty papers to go. So I’ll carry community out here. on studying while I’m at RedSo, did you study at the wood. university here? a new community It is going to be busy but I enjoy it. The way this course has been run it has great networking, a lot of educators and principals are working collaboratively. We want kids these days to work collaboratively so it’s great we have educators working and sharing research as well. I like keeping the old brain ticking over. So what prompted your decision to move into deputy principal at Redwood? I just felt like it was time for me, I’m doing the leadership papers and training at the moment, and Andrew Barker, the principal at Tai Tapu had been chatting to me about my next steps. I just felt it was the right time for me to put my hand up to take on a bigger leadership role. How do you feel about leaving? I don’t even know . . . it is quite hard because I’m excited, but at the same time I’ve done my bit at Tai Tapu. I feel like I changed the culture quite a bit and have left it in a good place. But no one is irreplaceable so someone new will come in with new ideas. It is quite sad – a lot of community people have come up to me in the last few days saying they’ll miss me, but I do think it’s time to move on. What are you looking forward to the most? I suppose coming to a new
LAST ROUND: Chris Els coaches the senior girls’ cricket team at Tai Tapu School. community and a new school, looking at and seeing the culture of Redwood and trying to make a difference there. It’s a bit of a step up – are you looking forward to the challenge? I am – I’m excited for the challenge – I’m actually meeting with the principal there early next month and I’ll have a better idea of what it will entail. I just really want to seek my teeth into something new now. What has been one of the biggest challenges in your career so far? Well I’m quite an easy going guy so I get on well with everyone. But I suppose the earthquakes, and having to look after the community’s children
through that. Although I’d been a policeman and you deal with crisis all the time, when you’re dealing with other people’s kids and keeping them safe – well that was quite a big challenge at the time. I’d never experienced an earthquake before. What’s been one of your favourite moments as a teacher so far? I think probably on the sports field – I’ve been really fortunate to coach a number of good sides. We’ve gone to nationals for cricket twice now, coached quite a bit of representative rugby as well and we’ve done really well on the field. So you’re pretty involved with sports coaching Chris? Yeah, I actually haven’t coached club sides for a while. I’ve

He’s got his rowing and rugby. We love our sports as a family and I’ve followed my son pretty closely for the last few years. Can you tell me a bit about the rest of your family? I have a daughter who is 21, Shani, she’s just done her postgraduate degree up in Wellington and is taking up a teaching position there this year. Then there’s my son, Adrian is year 12 going into year 13 at St Thomas, and my wife Elmarie, is the PA to the director at Discovery 1 School. So we’re all part of education. Have you done much in the Redwood community before? Not at all. I’ve basically always been Selwyn-based and involved in Selwyn schools so I’m quite new to Christchurch schools. And even that I’m looking forward to – working with new networks and clusters in the city. What sports and hobbies are you involved with yourself? Well there is coaching, and I love my golf and then basically just family time. I love spending time with my family. Because my daughter is in Wellington I love when I can get up there. And then I do a lot of reading. I love to open books for a good read.
•From page 1 Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith said the Government’s answer for Christchurch’s housing crisis was to increase supply with a particular focus on new homes priced for those on modest incomes. “The unique aspect of this design is the mix of new homes that are more affordable than typical market offerings in Christchurch and will be available at a range of prices,” he said. The Government’s low-purchase price was no lower than that of the average house price in the area. Christchurch East MP and Associate Housing spokeswoman, Poto Williams, said for lower income earners, $400,000 was unobtainable. “We haven’t had the wages increase at the same rate to afford the increase, so there is no way they will be able to afford this,” she said. Original director for the Real Estate Institution of New Zealand, Tony McPherson, said this was the reality of the market place. “It’s been a very strong market area, and obviously with the development going we would see demand not diminishing in that area,” he said. Company director of Harcourts Hornby, Kevin Mckay, said the new development would bring downward pressure for those on a lowbudget income. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, with the first homes expected to be completed in the first half of 2015.

Event likely to draw large crowd Retailer
in award finals
BY GRACE CABELL Recent residential boom for the area has organisers of the Halswell Light Party expecting the biggest turnout yet. In 2012, the Halloween alternative attracted 3000 to 4000 people. Last year an estimated 5000 people joined in on the festivities. Event organiser Kate Cleverly said she expects this year’s to be bigger than ever. “I can see it feeding the whole of the southwest of Christchurch,” she said. Ms Cleverly said in the past she had been flooded with nothing but positive feedback from the all-ages Halloween fair. “It’s one of those things that just started off as something local as an alternative to Halloween. It was such a need in the community,” she said. Halswell Community Project member Chrys Horn said organisers were worried about the potential size. “I think it will be huge this year. It will certainly be the same size and may grow even more,” she said. The party stands as an alternative to traditional Halloween activities, with free events including pony rides, train rides, bouncy castles and face painting. “It’s a great night for local families to get together and hang out,” said Ms Cleverly. She said the event last year attracted people of all ages from around Christchurch.
Exceptional service and outstanding leadership skills have secured Bryndwr resident Chris Asher (right) a spot as finalist in the Young Retailer of the Year category in this year’s Wares Awards. Each year, the Wares Awards acknowledges the achievements of retailers in the appliance retail sector. The 30-year-old is already the manager of Noel Leeming Riccarton, and will now stand as one of three finalists up for the title at this year’s awards. Mr Asher is the only Cantabrian to be named as a finalist. “Winning the award would be a fantastic achievement, to be recognised amongst a group of leading retailers in the industry,” said Mr Asher. The winner of the Young Retailer of the Year Award will not only receive industry-wide recognition for their achievement but also a travel grant to visit an international trade show of their choice. Mr Asher said he looked forward to having the opportunity to talk about the future of retail. The winner would be announced at an awards ceremony on November 13, in Auckland.
RISING NUMBERS: Last year an estimated 5000 people attended the Light Festival. Organisers expect this year’s to be even bigger. 3 exciting new businesses open at Avonhead Shopping Centre
Bigger and brighter at local florist The aroma and colour of flowers are the first things you’ll notice walking into Andrea’s Florist and Gift Shop. The store has been a stalwart of Avonhead Mall for 21 years, and owners Lyn and Andrea are enjoying having a larger and more spacious store and extending the business to include a range of giftware. Their longevity at the mall, she says, is because “our customers are lovely”. Lyn and Andrea’s family grow roses and gerberas and, with a selection of over 70 types of gerberas, every bouquet they create is not only beautiful but one of a kind. Open seven days a week, Andrea’s Florist and Gift Shop delivers flowers and is a member of Interflora. They can also personalise gourmet gift baskets from their range of goodies, including salted caramel popcorn, cranberry and white chocolate fudge, coffee beans or beetroot and toasted onion dip and more. Christmas is in the air so look no further than Andrea’s for the latest and most gorgeous selection of decorative pieces and some very different options for hanging on the tree. Children’s clothing are a feature, perfectly displayed on the line and in a variety of sizes to suit all ages. Brands include Linzi dresses, Lou and Olly Blankets and the Aden + Anais Swaddles made famous by Prince George. For gifts there is the iconic Beatrix Potter range, or have a look at some of the creative ideas from Kate Finn. At Andrea’s Florist and Gift Shop, you will also be spoilt for choice, whether buying something for yourself or a gift for a friend with the Blue Earth range of handmade soaps,Triumph and Disaster men’s toiletries, Living Light Candles, MOR cosmetics, Alumenti aluminium homewares, clocks, platters, soft blankets or a piece of Kiwiana. New stock is constantly arriving at Andrea’s so it might pay to make regular visits to the Avonhead

Mall store, particularly as Christmas draws nearer and the gift buying gets underway. To order flowers, simply telephone the store at 358 9458 or visit their website at www.andreasflorist.co.nz.
Gift shop with a difference Walking through the front entrance of Avonhead Shopping Centre and the first shop you see is Token. Inside you will find a gift and homewares shop which is truly different from any other with many designer pieces on display that are exclusive to Token. The store has been busy since it opened at Avonhead Mall only a month ago. Owner Eliza Rattray says that she has personally selected every item and loves everything in store. Sourced locally and from overseas, the extensive range of jewellery includes beautiful fine rings, necklaces and bracelets from Jolie and Deen, chunky glass and wooden pieces from Stilen and a variety of designs from Rare Rabbit. Handbags and wallets are a feature from Status Anxiety and the Bloomingville vases and Eliza Rattray candle holders make a perfect gift idea. Surmanti hand and body creams feature sophisticated black and gold packaging.Try the argan and camellia seed body mousse or the mango and rosehip. Beautifully scented Ecoya candles are also in store. A huge selection of baby gifts and children’s toys makes buying that perfect present for family and friends an easy choice. Colour is key with a wonderful variety of soft furnishings along with bowls, plates and platters, or for that simple but effective look, black and white combinations are always popular. Eliza also owns the Avonhead Pharmacy with her husband and opening the interconnected shop, she says, has given her an opportunity to enjoy her creative side. All the items are beautifully displayed and presented, making the store an easy place to browse. “I choose items that I love and I enjoy bringing in anything that is a bit different and can’t be found at other gift shops in Christchurch,” says Eliza. And be warned: It’s almost impossible to leave Token without purchasing anything – a testament to Eliza’s great taste in selecting such a wonderful and eclectic variety of gift and home wares. Token’s telephone number is 358 3663 for any enquiries.
Well-known real estate agency opens in Avonhead The latest Mike Pero Real Estate business is new to Avonhead Mall, offering a local service to the people of Avonhead and surrounds. Owner Sonia Tafilipepe opened the agency several weeks ago, after having worked as service delivery and training manager, recruitment officer and auctioneer for the corporate side of Mike Pero. “I was helping other people buy their own businesses and saw the opportunity to do the same,” says Sonia. With four sales people and administration and marketing/IT staff, the agency has hit the ground running and is already busy with both buying and selling properties. “It’s a buoyant market at the moment. I’ve recently listed 20 properties and receiving offers every second day. Many are cash buyers,” she says. The Mike Pero brand is extremely strong and popular for offering a range of marketing options, including television advertisements, an 0800 phone number and, most importantly for many sellers, only 2.95 per cent commission. “Our low commission means that clients are paying far less to sell their home but also have the advantage of being with Mike Pero as one of the top real estate agencies in New Zealand.” Sonia and her team are always happy to help both buyers and sellers, and Sonia’s personal approach is often welcomed during what can be a stressful time for many. She is also an auctioneer, making Mike Pero at Avonhead Mall a full service agency. Mike Pero at Avonhead Mall has properties from throughout Christchurch and features listings outside the agency, or they can be viewed on the website at www.mikepero.com. If you are thinking of selling your home or purchasing a new one, give Sonia Tafilipepe at Mike Pero Avonhead a call on 03 423 9485 or visit the team next time you are at Avonhead Mall. opens in Avonhead Sonia Tafilipepe

Fearless effort for fundraising event It is not every day you get to abseil down the side of a building in the central city. Earlier this month, staff and students from Hornby High School participated in the Drop Your Boss fundraising event, which aimed to raise money for the Canterbury branch of the Foundation for Youth Development. Hornby High student Jonty Robertson was also lucky enough to be included in the event. The event aimed to raise more than $14,000 to support the Kiwi Can, Stars and Project K programmes provided at the school. Hornby High teachers Honor Davies and Corey Kamaiera, were among the 30 bosses who abseiled down the Les Mills building on Cashel St. Jonty completed his abseil alongside mountaineer Graeme Dingle, co-founder of the Foundation of Youth Development Trust which delivers the programmes to the schools. Jonty learned to abseil while participating in one of the programmes, Project K. “Abseiling down a building alongside Graeme Dingle was really different from abseiling down a rock while on the Project K wilderness adventure,” said Jonty. He said being selected was “such a surprise” but he was excited to have been chosen.
Jonty delivered the speech given at the Project K graduation to Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, and Lady Janine Mateparae at government house last Wednesday.
Avonhead carpentry apprentice Tom Southen has been named the Registered Master Builders Carters 2014 Apprentice of the Year. The 23-year-old won the title last week at a two-day competition in Auckland, for his completion of a playhouse for charity. His completed playhouse will now be gifted to Life Education Trust Counties Manukau. Mr Southen is employed by Farmbuild and trained through the BCITO. The competition judges said Mr Southen’s dedication to his job and his hard-working nature was “incredibly impressive.” The project he submitted was his first as a lead on a job, and had
him working 65-hour weeks. Carters Auckland area manager Mike Guy was pleased with the talent shown by the nine apprentice finalists. “We hope our involvement in the competition gives the participants in apprentice of the year a memorable experience. They are the future of the New Zealand construction industry and we are proud to be assisting them in the best possible start to their careers,” he said. Mr Southen has won an Apple iPad, a Carters Business Tools Grant, valued at $5000, a tool and safety gear pack worth $1000 and the use of a Ford Ranger XLT vehicle for the duration of his reign as apprentice of the year.

Damaged church sold

▌FLAME ▌ FILES
BY GEORGIA JONES The Canterbury Catholic Diocese has sold the damaged St. Brendan’s church in Templeton to developers. The church is likely to be demolished and the diocese will use the money to upgrade facilities elsewhere. Local developers bought the 4047m2 section last month and the terms of sale are still being negotiated, but it is expected that they will clear the site to make way for seven new residential homes. Parish Pastoral Council chairperson Bevan Killick said the original stained glass windows and door hinges will be used in an extension to the St Bernadette’s church and parish centre in Hornby. Now at only eight per cent compliance with the required building code, Mr Killick said his council deemed it “uneconomic to repair.” St Brendan’s had already stopped being used for regular Sunday mass prior to the earthquakes and has remained unused for the last three and a half years. Bishop Barry Jones of the Canterbury Catholic Diocese said the church was a “wreck” from damage caused by the earthquakes. When St Brendan’s church was built in 1922, it came as a debt-free donation to the community. One hundred per cent of the sale benefit of the Canterbury Catholic Diocese.

I wasn’t able to write a Flame Files column last week. I was several kilometres up a farm track on a hillside near Hurunui where an Ohoka farmer lost his life in a controlled burn-off. I mention this because it was another example of a lack of knowledge on just how fast a fire can grow leaving the poor victim overcome. As a city firefighter I’ve seen this regularly over the years in the far too many fatal fires I’ve attended. Many, in houses, would not have proved fatal with the simple installation of smoke alarms. Without them, as in Hurunui, by the time the victims realised they were in trouble, it was too late to escape.
Last weekend there was a spate of skips and rubbish bins deliberately lit in New Brighton. If you have a commercial business in this area, or anywhere for that matter, for goodness sake please ensure skips are kept well away from buildings and wheelie bins are secured or locked away. There are arsonists free and living in our city. Don’t make it easy for them! A call to Ariel Place in Aranui last Sunday was a bit like a blast from the past when a waterbed started to leak and the house occupants could not contain it. We had quite a few of these ‘back in the day’ but I haven’t see one for several years. The house was left with hose in the bladder siphoning to the outside. All fixed!

‘Healthy’ Kiwis wearing rose tinted glasses
M
ore than half of us believe we’re above average when it comes to health but the country as a whole doesn’t fare too well, according to new research by Sovereign. “Our latest research revealed 57 per cent of Kiwis think that New Zealand, as a nation, is not very healthy, but 53 per cent believe they live a healthier lifestyle than the average New Zealander so it doesn’t apply to them,” says Sovereign chief medical officer Dr John Mayhew. “Interestingly, men rate themselves slightly higher than their female counterparts and 72 per cent of those in Marlborough and West Coast believe their health is above the average New Zealander.”
True
Sovereign’s research also delved into what we believe good health to be, including our understanding of what contributes to a healthy life. “There are documented medical links between happiness and good health. Happier people live longer and experience less heart disease, colds, high blood pressure and other serious illnesses. At Sovereign, more than 30 per cent of our disability income claims are due to mental illness. People need to be more aware of the importance of their happiness and its contribution to our overall health,” says Dr Mayhew. In another concerning statistic, a significant 66 per cent of people admitted to suffering from insomnia or broken sleep

over the last 12 months. “Not getting enough shut-eye on a regular basis can have devastating effects on your health, including weight gain, insulin resistance and an increased risk of accidents,” says Dr Mayhew. Encouraged by the finding that 60 per cent of Kiwis believe they are focusing more on their health now than they did a year ago, Sovereign has launched a new campaign inspiring New Zealanders to take charge of their health and understand the four essentials of a healthy lifestyle: exercise, eating well, sleep and happiness. Sovereign CEO Symon Brewis-Weston explains the ‘Life. Take charge’ campaign is not aimed at telling Kiwis how to be healthier, it is about giving them tools to do it. “We have decided it’s time to break the insurance industry mould and begin a movement that encourages Kiwis to take control of their health proactively before they need our help fixing them. Over the coming months, we’ll literally be giving New Zealanders tools that will help them have a
healthy and balanced lifestyle. Stay tuned,” says Brewis-Weston. “Supporting New Zealanders to live healthier lifestyles will not only make a difference to each person individually, the lives of their families and communities, but to the country overall. Healthier people need less medical intervention. Healthier communities place fewer burdens on the public health system. Healthy people are happier people and have better wellbeing.”

into 6cm rounds and transfer to a lined baking sheet. Gather the offcuts and repeat. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Cool slightly then split. Spread the bottom with a little strawberry jam. sheets and allow to rest for 30 minutes. (If the pastry is prerolled, omit this step.) Prick the surface all over with a fork. Preheat the oven to 200C. Bake the pastry until golden and crisp – around 15 minutes. Set aside. Whip the cream until lightly stiff. Hull the strawberries then slice the fruit in half. Gently heat the redcurrant jelly in a small saucepan until the jelly melts. To assemble the mille-feuille, take a sharp knife and trim the edges off the pastry sheets to make them sharp. Place the first
sheet on a serving platter. Spread with several tablespoonfuls of jam, then top with half the cream. Spread the second sheet with more jam, then place gently on top of the first sheet. Spread with the remaining cream and top with the last pastry sheet. Decorate the top with halved strawberries, then use a pastry brush to paint redcurrant glaze over the strawberries. It doesn’t matter if a little drizzles down. To serve, cut into slices with a sharp knife.

eing a recent school leaver, I decided I wanted to take my dream career further and looked into study options for Early Childhood. I had attended a food safety course that my workplace had put me through which was held at the Aoraki Polytechnic, and I loved the environment! I enrolled and completed the Certificate in Parenting and Care of Children, and then went on to further my studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Early Childhood Studies. Celebrating 70 years AS A COMMUNITY CENTRE This year marks the 70th year that Risingholme Community Centre has been operating as a community centre, and the 150th anniversary of the Risingholme Homestead in Opawa.
The temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa.
T
he Homestead is registered as a Category 2 historic place. From the registration details, Risingholme has architectural significance as a rare example of the domestic work of architect Maxwell Bury. The only other registered dwellings known to have been designed (at least in part) by Bury are Chippenham Lodge in Christchurch (Category 2) and the Professorial Houses at Otago University. Risingholme was built in 1864 by William and Mary Reeves, parents of politician
William Pember Reeves. After the death of William Reeves in 1891, the house had several further private owners until 1943, when it was purchased and presented to the City of Christchurch by J R McKenzie for the “health, amusement and instruction of the public”. After a public meeting in St Mark’s schoolroom, Opawa, on February 24, 1944, the Risingholme Community Centre Incorporated Society was formed. Dr H E Hansen, the chairman of the committee who set up at this historic meeting, had been a leader in adult education for many years and under his guidance, the committee established its first activities: a nursery play centre, a room for the Plunket Society, drama, play reading and study/discussion groups. Within six months, the first director W Ross Edwards, was appointed and by July 1945, an energetic programme was in place, including a Young People’s Club, woodwork classes and bridge and garden groups.
Careless translation BITES CHICKEN EXPORTER
T
he people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing. A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these 10 words, “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken”. This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat. But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as, “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”. Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused.

Three points to ponder Clever writers can earn substantial fees. Translating English into other languages has traps for the unwary. Proofreaders who understand two languages are valuable people in exporting, document t ranslating and book publishing. “We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “They also get thoroughly proofread before being released.” If interested in writing or proofreading work at home, phone 0800 801 994 and ask for the free report #805, “When You Have A Passion For Story Telling”. The Homestead
has continued to flourish, now working collaboratively with a number of schools and community groups. Risingholme is also host to a variety of independent community groups and activities. As a result of the recent earthquakes in Canterbury, the Homestead and hall were damaged and is currently in the City Council’s Facilities Repair programme, with no known date for repairs to start. The centre is seen as a priority and funding was committed to repair the buildings by the Council, according to the Mayor’s news release on September 4. The centre was also successful in acquiring a grant from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust to erect a temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa. This lovely facility is now completed and already hosting a range of classes and will be officially opened on October 23.

By 1946, the committee had decided to build a hall so that the centre could accommodate more activities and so began a succession of fairs, fetes and other fundraising activities that finally led to the construction of the hall/ theatre and later the craft rooms at the back of the park. Year 1947 saw both the completion of the hall and the arrival of Dorothy Crumpton as the new director, and these two factors led to an increased level of activity at Risingholme. Drama was a focus, two choirs were started, films were shown and classes which had begun under the auspices of both the Christchurch Technical College and the WEA expanded. By 1954 the craft rooms were completed to accommodate the growing number of craft classes, such as woodwork and pottery - it was also, sadly, the year that Dorothy died after a period of declining health. It was then that Jeanne Edgar became director and this began a long and stable period for the centre as Jeanne maintained and gradually built on the activities already in place until her retirement in 1983. Jeanne Edgar was succeeded by Raewyn Cooke, who brought many positive changes to the way Risingholme operates. Through the energy and vision of Raewyn, the centre became independent in 2004. In April 2007, Raewyn Cooke was succeeded by Maryke Fordyce as director. The community education programme

Simply irrisistible
Family Friendly 2 course Kids special
$ 950 Great Kids menu plus designated play area
Stunning food coupled with a chance to shop makes a visit to Urban Corner Cafe simply irresistible. The cafe now has an assortment of trendy trinkets and modern decor home wares on display that are well worth a browse. From chunky fashion jewellery through to contemporary iron wall art, there’s bound to be that perfect something for someone special. “Our gift selection is similar to what you’ll find in specialist gift shops in the malls, but at a fraction of the price,” said Katrina Hargen, co-owner. Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design. Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within. The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated. The left side of the structure houses The Bower... a lovely modern styled bar decked out with booth and leaner seating, a gaming room, and fabulous sun drenched sheltered outdoor area. The bar offers a wide range of regular entertainment including live music and live sports coverage. To the right side of the structure is The Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant. Urban Corner has a wide attraction. Opening from 9am it offers a great array of gourmet cabinet food available to eat in or takeaway and great espresso, as well as a la carte lunch and dinner menus. It’s decor is tastefully bright and breezy, and the dining area opens out to an al fresco dining deck that steps down to two safe and secure kiddies play area. At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has just launched a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes. Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in The Bower bar.
